Overpriced and disappointing; the charm of the castle cannot compensate everything

点评：Amberley castle is a beautiful venue with a lot of history and beaufiful village nearby. Given the reviews and having 'the traveller's award 2024' theoretically a place not to miss. (Although a lot of reviews are rather old.) However... We visited the castle as a family (2 adults, 2 children) in Autumn 2024. We did a tour in the south of England and visited other hotels (also from Brownsword group), so were be able to compare several venues. The castle has a lot of charm, but both the castle walls as the garden are 'under construction' at the moment. As as result not everything is accessible. No problem, if it this would have been communicated prior to the stay, but we ended in an unpleasant suprise. The room, especially the beds for the children, were very disappointing. The children complaint about backache due to 'camping style' beds. The castle and the main house compensated the stay with a lot of castle style charm (fireplaces, arms etc). However, in the main rooms (eg lobby) some sort of renovation is necessary as well. During our stay preparations were made for a wedding the next day, which led to a focus of the personal elsewhere (in our welcoming letter we were adressed wrongly as being part of the wedding party). The staff tried to help out where possible, no complaints there. But given the price, the stay was overall disappointing and overpriced. As this was the exception of our holiday we tried to give feedback on our stay. All other hotels had the politeness to respond, except this hotel. Hospitality comes in many different forms, please do better in the future. (consult the collegues of Gidleigh Park *****?)
