点评:After arriving from the airport into Central R.R. Station, we exited and rounded the corner of the building in search of a tram to our hotel and encountered this huge open square bounded on one side by the station and inner harbor wharfs, on another by De Bijenkorf Department Store (easily recognizable by its beehive shaped dome on top), on others by hotels, cafes, sandwich shops, and private buildings.
The square was bustling with traffic including trams, buses, cars, people on bicycles, and walkers. There was activity everywhere which elicited excitement on our part. This is the place to be to pick up a bite to eat from street vendors including the “famous” French fries with mayonnaise sauce, listen to buskers imparting both instrumental and vocal music, and just watching people who are in somber black and grey (popular with Europeans), the favorite bright orange (color de jour for Netherlanders), or other day glow colors.
Dam square is the center of everything in Amsterdam and all public transport either starts, terminates, or runs through the square. It’s the place to start your excursion through Amsterdam whether it be on land or water.
