Superbly located, but interesting ruins, too
Dunnottar Castle的点评
点评：Dunnottar has been used regularly by film and TV crews as it has a superb location, situated on a promontory, and approached by two flights of steps – down to a saddle from the car park, then up into the castle itself.
There are excellent views from both sides of the castle along the cliff tops, but is it definitely worth going inside as well. I had been concerned that, as it is primarily a ruin and admissions is not cheap, it might be disappointing inside, but the castle had sufficiently many separate areas, and reasonably informative explanation boards (only in English) to justify the fee. Many buildings had great views down to the North Sea, with bird colonies on the rocks beneath. Admission includes an A5 card with a birdseye view drawing on the castle on one side, and a simple “can you find” quiz on the reverse.
The buildings go back to the thirteenth century, although the keep was built in 1392. In the sixteenth century it was expanded greatly, adding a range of additional buildings. In 1717 the tenth Earl Marischal forfeited his lands and property and the castle was sold, and stripped of anything that could be reused. Acquired by Lord Cowdray as a ruin in 1919, he began an extensive programme of conservation and restoration works, protecting it from further damage and deterioration and opened the Castle to the public.
There's free parking (and toilets) at the top of the path, though it sometimes fills up (and coaches have a small separate parking area). Access by car is from the A92 to the South of Stonehaven - there is no vehicle access from the town itself.
The castle is not suitable for people with mobility difficulties.
