I feed the pigeons, I sometimes feed the sparrows too. It gives me a sense of enormous well-being". That's from the 90s Blur song, Parklife. I felt it apt when talking about Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens.
If you visit Edinburgh Botanical Gardens you can do all that those lyrics say, and more. I didn't actually see sparrows. In Europe they're very common in cities, but not so much the UK. But there are plenty of other small birds, ducks and moorhens, as well as the always abundant seagulls and pigeons. They're all hungry, but the seagulls are bullies.
What there also is are plenty of grey squirrels, and they're very friendly. If you like to be close to nature then you're in for a treat here. The boldest ones will come right up to you and even climb your legs for a tasty nut. Please try to feed them healthy nuts.
This is not for everyone, I know, and you can happily wander a lovely picturesque gardens at your leisure. It's a lovely relaxing place, even in January. Cold though. Wrap up warm.
