Having performed at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival for over 18 years, I know firsthand the level of artistry and dedication that once defined this event. It was never meant to be a costumed craft fair. It was built as an immersive, theatrical journey into the 1500s—an escape from the modern world where patrons could lose themselves in history, story, and performance.
The heart of the festival used to be its character work. Performers invested countless hours in building identities, learning the history of the period, and mastering the art of interacting with guests in ways that were playful, educational, and transformative. That attention to detail turned a day at the festival into something unforgettable. It wasn’t just entertainment—it was living history.
Unfortunately, that heart has been hollowed out. Today, the Kansas City Renaissance Festival bears little resemblance to the rich, immersive world it once aspired to be. Instead, it has devolved into a glorified shopping mall in costume. The focus has shifted almost entirely to vendors and trinkets, while authentic character interaction and storytelling have been sidelined. What patrons now encounter is superficial spectacle rather than substance.
This decline is not just disappointing—it undermines the very mission of what a Renaissance Festival should be. Without authentic immersion, without performers empowered and expected to embody history, the festival loses its identity. It becomes indistinguishable from any other outdoor fair, stripped of the uniqueness that once set it apart.
