Foynes Flying Boat Museum的点评
点评：Foynes is historically important as, in the 1930s, it was the hub for flights for the huge flying boats from the US, UK, Europe, the Middle East and as far away as South America. The museum, located on the site of the old terminal building, was opened in 1987 by the actress Maureen O’Hara who was married to Captain Charles Blair, the Pan Am Clipper pilot who flew the first non-stop passenger flight from Foynes to New York and the last scheduled flight out of Foynes in 1945.
Our visit to Foynes was elevated by Rachel’s welcoming smile, love for Foynes and radiant personality. She provided endless titbits of information that we would have missed without her help.
My husband had a private pilot’s license at 17 and did his first solo flight at 16, before he could hold a driver’s license. His father trained British RAF and American pilots during World War II and his uncle flew PBY Catalinas in the Pacific. So, it was quite a trip down memory lane, as my husband and Rachel traded stories throughout our tour.
In addition to the aviation displays, the museum also features Maureen O’Hara’s wardrobe and movie memorabilia from over 56 movies. The marine history of the area is also featured at the Museum on the top floor. The Foynes terminal building was also home to O’Regan’s Bar where Irish Coffee was invented and served by chef Joe Sheridan, who later moved to San Francisco and worked for the Buena Vista in Fisherman’s Wharf, which often claims to be home of the first Irish Coffee. But without doubt, it was first made and served by Sheridan in Foynes.
Our canine companion, who travels everywhere with us, was walked and loved and catered to by Julia and Paula, who almost fought over who could take him. It was a wonderful trip and we would highly recommend a visit to this hidden gem, close to the village of Adare and Limerick city and the car ferry across the Shannon estuary at Tarbert.
