Take the Time to Visit, even if You Have to go to Windy Ridge.
Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument的点评
点评:If you lived through the 1980s, Mount St. Helen's is a place that captivates your mind as the volcano in the US. The massive eruption had significant impact on the country in 1980 and today it still has massive impact on the immediate area 43 years later. For those reasons, it is something every American should make the effort to see.
Unfortunately, many of the ways to see and experience the park are closed due to a rockslide which destroyed the road to the Johnson Ridge Observatory. Seeing this, I had enough time and courage to find another place, Windy Ridge which currently can only be accessed from Randle. Still it is slow and adventurous. However, unlike Johnson Ridge which is 3 miles away from the volcano, Windy Ridge is next to it with a gravel road you can hike to the base of the volcano.
Yes, Mount St. Helens is still active, but unlikely to have the explosion that destroyed and covered a 7 mile radius to the north towards Johnson Ridge. It is still monitored by scientist today. The site is surreal as there are no trees around for miles which is unlike every other area in western Washington that is blanketed with some of the most tremendous trees outside of the California Redwoods. For this reason, the trail is hotter and drier than most. Be SURE to bring some WATER if you hike.
With that said, the area does have awesome wildflowers and tons of bees and insects. The insects don't bite, but they can be aggressive if you stop for long periods. This was also unusual for everywhere else we hiked in Washington. You will also get great views of Spirit Lake which was once covered with ash. The new lake with more surface area and less depth is now the home for a large floating debris of logs that move with the wind.
While the area is eerie, you will see signs of life returning with wildflowers and insects. It is just cool to be hiking on a place which once was the sight of such destruction. This was one of the highlights of our trip to Washington and I cannot recommend enough. It is a great attraction to see and like nothing else you will find in all of North America. Take the time to visit.
