点评：Golf course reviews are always quite selective obviously, but no matter which golf magazine or list you see on the top golf courses, Royal County Down (RCD) is usually ranked, if not in the top 5 courses in the world, then certainly in nearly all top ten rankings. This isn’t by accident. My group of four friends rolled into RCD recently for our second visit in 15 years. One of the top jewels in European golf still dominates with the combination of course design, extreme topography in the formidable sandy dunes that drop off the beach into the course, and sheer intimidation that can come with so many blind shots that await the golfer. Throw in the wind and occasional rain, and it is one of the great challenges in golf.
The team in the pro shop is on top of the details. From the second you step out of your car, they are there for you. The team in the pro shop is well trained and attentive. The staff in the club house upstairs are fun and service oriented. This is a club that knows exactly what they are doing, and it is all to the benefit of you. We took caddies, which is essential if this is your first trek around RCD. The course would be next to impossible to negotiate the first time without at least a fore caddie. We were blessed with steady winds of 20mph with gusts up to 35mph, and occasionally bouts of rain. You have a choice. You can either let this beat you before you start, or you gear up in your rain clothes and put on a game attitude and embrace the experience. We went with the latter and ended up having an outstanding experience.
This is golf in a natural , unpolished setting. The course emanates raw power along with exquisite design. You have to think your way around it, and also endure the climbs and drops off the significant dunes. No buggies here, you are walking the course and all that it encompasses. The setting is at times both spectacular and intimidating. The moments of satisfaction are wonderful. You are in nature, and in the hands of the golf gods. If you aspire to golf in Ireland, put this one at the very top of the list of challenges. St. Patricks’ Links may some day challenge RCD, but that day is still quite a way in the future.
