点评:I loved my visit to this site. The mosaics are exceptionally high quality and very different in style from those at Fishbourne; they truly do warrant a visit. The Ganymede and the Medusa are best known, I guess, but for me the highlight was the whole length of mosaic showing two gladiators in training who also just happen to be cupids. I’ve never seen a mosaic before where an injured party is actually bleeding! It’s so vivid, almost like a strip cartoon, and I thought it was extraordinary. Also extraordinary but for a very different reason is another mosaic in black and white with faces depicted in each corner; I’m kicking myself for not taking a picture because it’s so bad I can’t believe the artist wasn’t forced to take it up and do it again! It really made me laugh!
The other mosaic which will stay with me for a long time is apparently the longest found in the country so far, and its beauty is in how well it shows the Romans’ use of mosaics as pretend rugs. It did make me wonder whether in winter all the mosaics would have been covered up with identical rugs until it got warm again. Who knows?
Please do find the time to visit this site. It may not have had the time and attention lavished on it that Fishbourne has had, but it, and the people who run it, are utterly, utterly charming.
