点评:If you visit Munich, you must visit this square. While the city suffered mayor damage during WWII, some of the buildings have survived and have been successfully repaired. City hall is a beautiful example of the neo-Gothic style favored during the last half of the 19th century. The building, as currently stands, was started in 1867 and was completed only in 1906, although various parts were added at different times. City leadership and civil service functions in this building, which also houses a few shops and a traditional Bavarian restaurant, the Ratskeller. There also is a helpful tourist information office on the ground floor. The main tower soars to 278 feet, or about 85 meters and visitors can enjoy the sights of the city by using an elevator. The Rathaus Glockenspiel is a major tourist attraction: 32 life-size figures re-enact historical scenes of the city three times a day: 11, am, 12 and 5 pm. There are several historical churches within walking distance of the square, including the Cathedral, and there are shops on the square and throughout the streets that lead up to Marienplatz.
