点评:This was a fabulous evening hearing an opera I have seen many times in a new interpretation by Kosky with a very good cast and the Orchestra of this Opera which has to be one of the best in the world. Vladimir Jurowski has now been in charge for some years and the team in the pit were a superb anchor to all on stage. Bavarian horn players are rather special in the sound they make and Richard Strauss writes so well for them.
Brindley Sherratt as Ochs was known to me and as ever he was in great voice but the two American singers in the roles of Octavian and Sophie were revelations and deserved the thunderous and long applause at the end. Liv Redman as Sophie was the best performance of that role I can remember. Her ability to hit the notes perfectly and float over the orchestra will be in my memory for many a year.
The opera house was bombed to rubble by the Allies and quite rapidly rebuilt to be open again in the year before Richard Strauss died. It lacks the grandeur of some houses, but, it gives an immediate feeling of spaciousness compared say to Covent Garden. Its bars a numerous and long enabling speedy service in intervals. They had 2 of 45 minutes.
Barrie Kosky can be really annoying and also brilliant. Here, apart from the odd excess and the obligatory half naked man haunting the action, he oozes ideas and new thoughts casting aside many conventions such as rustic Ochs followers. He explains it is a dream. With that all flows to that unforgettable trio.
