点评:This was the second half of a day trip from Dresden by train, with the morning and early afternoon taken up by a trip to Rothen/the Bastei Bridge. That left only about 2 1/2 hours for Koenigstein, and that's not enough. It's not a castle as such, but a castle complex, with many buildings with the walls, many of them having displays to explore.
Had there been time to explore everything within the castle complex, this review might have become a five-star review. I missed a lot due to lack of time. So - set aside enough time to explore this place thoroughly, at a relaxed pace.
The views from the castle to the Elbe River valley are impressive.
The 5 Euro fare for the small train from the main square in Koenigstein is worth the money, I think, as the trek up to the castle from the town has quite a bit of elevation gain, and the train takes you right to the entrance to the castle. (If you come by car and park in the castle parking lot, you will still have a bit of a hike, as the castle parking lot is about halfway down the hill and a few hundred metres from the castle entrance). I ended up walking down, however, as the castle closes later than the time of the last train down, so walking down allowed some extra time in the castle complex. The walk down is enjoyable, through quiet forest.
The available audio guide is very helpful.
Overall, a great half-day destination.
