点评：The highest point in Germany is a fun half day trip that can become full day with a hike at Eibsee. It is best to visit on a cloud-less day, unfortunately for us, we had partial cloud cover in the morning and storms in the afternoon. We had a good visit despite the weather. Our home base was the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We walked to the Zugspitze train station from our hotel (this is different than the other train station that operates DB trains, they are right next to each other and it's hard to miss the "Zugspitze" sign on the one you want). We arrived to the station and purchased Zugspitze tickets. That is good for a roundtrip on the cog train and cable car (both take you to the top, but the cable car is much quicker, I suggest cable car up and train down). I recommend sitting on the right side of the train for better views. Be mindful not to get the "Garmisch Classic" ticket, it will not take you up to the top of the Zugspitze, it takes you to different hiking points with are excellent in their own right. There are fun things to do at the top. There is a restaurant, toilet and gift shop. We were able to enjoy about a half day because the weather quickly changed and became unsafe for outdoor activities. But, you can make a full day out of it by taking a hike around the Eibsee or even taking a dip (Eibsee, or Lake Eib, is located at the base of the cable car station and there is a cog train station there as well).
If it is super cloudy or the weather is bad the entire day, it is hard to recommend going to the top. Tickets are not cheap and it is hard to justify the cost to see only twenty meters in front of you. The engineering accomplishment is incredible, but might not be enough to justify the cost.
