Outstanding Birding Tour in the Everglades

点评：I wanted to plan a birding tour for my wife as part of a surprise birthday trip to Florida and I reached out to Tour the Glades for more info. Tod was responsive and easy to work with when making plans, and provided suggestions for places to stay and other things to see.
Our private birding excursion had a great vibe. The 3 of us (me, my wife and son) started the morning in Tod's pick-up tooling along the dirt roads of Everglades National Park at an easy pace, spotting birds and other wildlife in Fakahatchee Strand and Big Cypress Preserves. Tod was friendly and knowledgeable, and was as excited as we were about some of the rare birds we spotted. We did some light hiking, learning about local flora and trying to spot big cats (my son saw a bobcat crossing the road!) We also heard some interesting Florida history, sprinkled with local legends and fascinating characters. Tod prepared a snack for us... chocolate and several different kinds of delicious juicy oranges.
The morning was very low key but a lot of fun, and we spotted a wood stork, a swallowtail kite, a least bittern, pileated woodpeckers, and herons of all colors... in all, almost 30 different species of birds!
Midday, we said "so long" to Tod, and after a nice lunch on our own we drove to the Smallwood Store in Everglades City, where Tod had arranged a private boat trip for us around Ten Thousand Islands. As we started out, some dolphins greeted us and swam in our wake for a while. The captain took us out among the mangroves, where we spotted many more birds, including pelicans, terns, osprey, and a bald eagle. Again, our guide was very knowledgeable and treated us well. We took a family pic in front of a gulf sunset, and then ended the tour by watching hundreds of birds of all kinds fly in to roost for the night on a small mangrove island rookery.
Overall, it was a magical day and we felt we got much more than our money's worth. Tour the Glades gave us a comfortable, exciting and authentic Everglades experience without all the touristy nonsense. 10/10!
