点评:Unlike the mountainous Asian and Eastern European regions, mountain monastery is something rare in western Europe. So, if there is one nearby to your vacation city, it is a no-brainer to make a trip there, gravitating away from the repetitive cathedrals and palaces prevalent in most European cities. It is with this in mind that while in Barcelona, it is a must to plan for at least a day-trip to the Montserrat Monastery, perched high on the Montserrat Mountain about 48 km from the city. Mountain monastery has always piqued my senses and imagination, and I can't help it but be filled with an air of mystique and a sense of wonderment as to how the elaborate monastery complex was constructed centuries ago. Officially called the Santa Maria de Montserrat, this stunning monastery complex was founded in 1025 and has been an important religious pilgrimage site for centuries. Today, it remains an active Benedictine abbey with a basilica at its centre and includes a museum, school, refectory, and about 80 resident monks. Only the basilica, museum and atrium are opened to visitors. A must-do for visitors to Montserrat is to touch the hand of the Black Madonna statue, which is believed to bring blessings. For this, be prepared to queue your way to the throne room behind the altar of the basilica. Beyond this spiritual pursuit, your body and soul rejuvenation will be complete once you take in the surrounding breathtaking views of the jagged mountains, or better still, hike one of the many mountain trails. Getting to Montserrat is relatively easy and involves 3 different modes of transportation - metro to the Plaza de Espana metro station, an hour on the R5 regional train to the foothill of the mountain, and finally, either the cable car or funicular train to reach the monastery atop the mountain. If ever there is a stairway to the heavens, this is it - a place that offers visitors with a unique spiritual, cultural and nature-based experience.
