点评:Montserrat is an absolute must-visit from Barcelona. The setting alone is jaw-dropping – a monastery perched among surreal, jagged mountains that look like they belong on another planet.
Getting there – read this for a smoother trip:
We took the R5 train from Plaça Espanya, which was easy and efficient. Here's the key tip: instead of getting off at Monistrol de Montserrat, stay on the train one more stop to Monistrol Vila. From there, the connection to the cremallera (rack railway) is much more frequent, so you'll wait far less time than at the other station. This made our journey up the mountain seamless.
Once at the monastery, we visited the Basilica to see the famous Black Madonna (La Moreneta) – the line moves slowly but it's worth it. The views from the lookout point were fantastic.
One thing worth mentioning is the museum: it has stunning masterpieces from many Spanish modern artists, including Dalí, Picasso, but also many others which we found fascinating.
Allow at least half a day, ideally more if you want to hike. Book train and funicular tickets online in advance to save time.
Something worth mentioning: I got confused and I book tickets for the wrong day and I only realized the day before. I sent them an email explaining the situation, and they were very kind issuing tickets for the correct day. Very thankful as it is an expensive outing.
A truly unforgettable day trip.
