A Day at K20: Exploring 20th Century Art

点评：I visited K20 for the first time on a Sunday in June and ended up spending almost six hours there—from shortly after opening until around 5:15 PM. I bought my ticket at the museum without any issues; advance booking wasn’t necessary when I visited. Admission to both the permanent collection and the temporary exhibition (Anne Truitt: Pioneer of Minimal Art) was around €15 total.
The permanent collection was the highlight of my visit. K20 focuses on 20th-century art and features works from artists across the world, including well-known names such as Andy Warhol, Robert Delaunay, and Sonia Delaunay. The collection is spread across two floors and consists primarily of paintings, along with a few installations.
One tip for first-time visitors: use the free digital guide. You can access it by scanning a QR code anywhere in the museum, and it is available in both German and English. While staff mentioned that the rooms can be viewed in any order—and technically that’s true—the digital guide provides a recommended route through the galleries. I would strongly recommend following it. The museum layout can feel a bit like a maze, and without the guide it’s easy to miss a room or accidentally skip part of the collection.
I spent roughly five hours exploring the permanent collection and about an hour in the temporary exhibition. The museum closes at 6 PM, which gives visitors plenty of time to experience everything without feeling rushed.
The museum also has lockers available for storing bags and luggage, which was very convenient, as well as clean restrooms throughout the building. These small practical details made it easy to spend an entire day there comfortably.
Overall, K20 is an excellent museum for anyone interested in modern art. The collection is extensive, internationally diverse, and thoughtfully presented. I would happily visit again and would recommend setting aside at least half a day—if not a full day—to appreciate it properly.
