点评:Despite visiting Theodore Roosevelt National Park during the (damn) government shut down in late Sept/early Oct 2025, we had a lovely time. It was very disappointing that the Visitors Center and other buildings weren’t open and staffed, but we were grateful the park itself was open.
We spent one full day on the South side of the Park, and another full day on the North Side. We also spent approximately an hour and a half at the Painted Canyon area.
If you’re looking for wildlife, we definitely saw a lot more on the South side - LOTS of buffalo - up close and personal - right on the roadside, sometimes IN the road. We also saw prairie dogs by the zillions, and two wild horses.
We did a number of the shorter hikes - 1 to 3 miles - on both sides of the park - none of the 10+ mile ones. All of these hikes were very enjoyable, and we saw so many interesting things, plus learned a lot by reading the informational signs along the scenic drive.
While the North side is an hour’s drive away from the South side, we definitely felt it was worth the effort. One reason was seeing the very unique “cannonball” rock formations on that side, plus taking a hike in the prairie land that wasn’t so much present on the South side.
We are National Park junkies, and this was our 40th park to visit. We love them all!
