Powerful waterfall along the Diamond Circle
黛提瀑布的点评
点评：This is one of the great waterfalls in Iceland and one of the most powerful walls in Europe. Dettifoss is located along Route 862 north of the Ring Road, part of the Diamond Circle group of natural sightseeing attractions in this northern part of Iceland.
You will find a large free carpark area with free public toilets on this West side of the river and falls. There is also a carpark on the East side of the falls as well. On the West side, you will find a short and easy to follow trail that leads to a couple of viewpoints of the falls, one being quite close. Dettifoss is around 100 metres in length and 44 metres in height, pouring a huge volume of water into the canyon below. The scene is very impressive.
Note: In addition to Dettifoss, you can also walk around 5-6 minutes further upstream and see the beautiful Selfoss, a waterfall fronted rugged cliffs on both sides. Unfortunately the trail ends some distance away from Selfoss, it makes for a great complement waterfall to see while visiting Dettifoss. For those with more time, there is a third major falls, Hafragilsfoss downstream of Dettifoss that makes up a trio of impressive falls to see at this location. There is a separate carpark for Hafragilsfoss around 2.5 km further north of Dettifoss.
Note: There is an Icelandic Meat Soup wagon setup in the Dettifoss West carpark. They sell delicious and thick local meat soup that was delicious. Would have happily ordered a second bowl if we had time. Definitely worth a try if visiting Dettifoss and fancying a local Icelandic style beef soup during your visit.
