These are some of the best petroglyphs we have seen in the Southwest. They are the work of the Fremont people and they are very detailed.
There are two trails, the Kings trail and the Main trail. We far preferred the King's trail. It is accessed going out of the parking lot to the left toward to large standing rock.
Both trails are steep with lots of rocks and at times treacherous footing. I would strongly recommend using good walking poles if you are at all unstable on your feet or are concerned about heights.
The petroglyphs are much more detailed that petroglyphs we have seen elsewhere depicting "kins" or "Chieftains" in their full regalia. Since the cliffs are sand stone, some of the petroglyphs are starting to wear away, but the ones on the desert varnish are fabulous. You don't see any of the stick figures that you see elsewhere.
Below the cliffs there is a large pond which had Canada Geese with chicks, Redwing Blackbirds and a pair of Sand HIll Cranes with their summer dyed feathers calling to their echo in the cliffs above.
