Beautiful castle that's well worth visiting if you're in Cochem

点评：I enjoyed my visit to the Reichsburg Cochem very much. It's a beautiful castle with an interesting history, and I loved that it retains the feeling of being a castle that people actually lived in rather than just an empty relic. It was the summer house for a rich businessman in the 19th century, and is full of the Renaissance and Baroque furniture he collected and used there.
The castle is very close to town so it is possible to walk there, but it is at the top of a steep hill so I recommend taking the 701 bus to get there. Even with the bus there is a fairly steep walk up the last part of the hill to the castle itself but my 85-year-old father managed it fine.
The only way to visit is on one of the regular tours. Most tours are in German, and only one English tour was available on the day I was there (at 12:30pm, ticket price 10€) and the number of English tours varies based on demand so it's hard to know in advance when they are. I'm sure you could call to ask, the ticket staff all spoke excellent English.
We were early for our tour so we spent an hour waiting in the castle restaurant next to the ticket office. The coffee and food there was very good, we particularly enjoyed their Schwarzwälder cake which was fresh and not too sweet.
The 45 minute tour itself was enjoyable, with lots of good stories about the castle and plenty of opportunities to take photos. It gets a bit crowded in some of the rooms so it can be hard to take photos of the castle interiors without lots of people in the way, but perhaps that encouraged me to see it with my own eyes instead of through a camera lens. It's not a very long tour and so we don't see everything in the castle, but it's enough to get a good feeling for it and was really all I needed.
