The Most Prominent of Cologne's 12 Romanesque Churches

点评：Great St. Martin is one of the 12 Romanesque churches that Cologne was known for and perhaps the most prominent church in the city after the Cathedral. Its location in the center of the Old Town adjacent to the riverfront as well as its distinctive soaring square tower make it an attraction you are sure to see if you spend any time in the Old Town.
While its exterior is a landmark for the city, it interior may be the most Romanesque of the 12, certainly the 6 we were able to visit. It is a heavy stone church with thick walls and few windows. While much of the church is a renovation to repair WWII damage, the church is built on the site of an old Roman chapel with historic structure build around 1200. In some ways, it is one of the few Romanesque churches where the exterior is more decorative than the interior.
While the church itself is free to visit, if you want to see the historic Roman undercroft, it will cost additional two Euros. My daughter and I paid to go under the church, and it was an interesting experience. We spent about 30 minutes inside the church including going to the undercroft. As for the exterior we walked by it several time crisscrossing the city.
