Great Monument with Incredible Views
尼德瓦尔德纪念碑的点评
点评：Ruedesheim sits at the beginning of the downstream Rhine Gorge where the Rhine River is completely flanked but steep hills on both sides. In this gorge between Ruedesheim and Koblenz are nearly 40 beautiful castles and churches that dot the gorge. The start of this best stretch of the river is capped by one of the more recent additions to the gorge overlooking the Rhine River and Ruedesheim, the Niederwald Monument.
High above the Rhine sits a 41 foot statue of Germania standing on an equally tall pedestal holding the Imperial Crown in her right hand and the Imperial Sword in her left to signify the first unification of Germany in 1870 after victory in the Franco-Prussian War. This monument built after the creation of Germany was started by Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1877. Today it is an important monument to the unification of the German speaking people.
Our family visited late in the afternoon that our cruise made port in Rudeshiem. We rode the gondola cable car to the top. The gondola has a slight charge but seeing the statue and the view of the Rhine from it is free. By the time of our late day visit, the monument was relatively empty without any crowds. While the statue and monument are impressive, the best thing about visiting is the incredible views you get of the Rhine and Rudesheim below. The view is amazing and the pictures won't do it justice. Also, while pictures of the monument are better in the morning for sun angle, the pictures from the top of the Rhine Valley below are best in the afternoon. If you are in Rudeshiem, take the time to visit the statue and take in the views of the Rhine Valley. They are truly amazing and incredible.
