Big dreams for a small town - definitely worth following them.

点评：Bishop Auckland is honestly amazing and the Auckland Project is at the heart of that. I remember BA as a desperately depressed former mining town in the early noughties - so heartening to see it putting itself on the map now with four incredible museums, not to mention a great café and restaurant.
Auckland Palace is beautiful and fascinating, not just as a way to understand the might of the Prince Bishops, but to get a sense of some strong characters in history - abolitionists, advocates, mediators, anti-appeasers... and Spitting Image icons. Amazing guides, so interesting and well-informed and passionate. The Zurbarán portraits (Jacob and his Twelve Sons) are absolutely magnificent in real life and so worth seeing.
The Spanish Gallery is a gem - currently open for tours morning and afternoon, some places bookable online and some for walk-ins. We'd visited before but learned even more with an excellent, knowledgeable guide.
I didn't have a chance to visit the Mining Art Gallery or Faith Museum, but my OH was impressed (and the Faith Museum is a beautiful contemporary building too).
We had a great family supper at El Castillo, the tapas bar-restaurant attached to the Spanish Gallery - classic tapas and fantastic fresh produce from the palace's walled garden. Glad to see it among the Guardian's top museum and gallery restaurants - deservedly!

我们在西班牙画廊旁的西班牙小吃酒吧餐厅El Castillo享用了一顿丰盛的家庭晚餐——经典的西班牙小吃和宫殿围墙花园里产的美味新鲜农产品。很高兴看到它跻身《卫报》最佳博物馆和画廊餐厅之列——实至名归！
