点评:We took a 9:30 AM tour on Labor Day weekend. Group size was small enough to hear the tour guide at around 15 people. We had the retired military tour guide. Like many people, I had misconceptions about the bunker. I thought it was for the President but it was meant to contain the House and Senate members and some other key staff in the event of nuclear attack during the Cold War. They provided for house and senate chambers in the facility plus living accommodations. The facility was constructed by locals and so was an open secret; however, the legislators were never informed. I found it unsettling that only lawmakers willing to leave their families would be evacuated. There seems to be agreement that this costly plan would have been unlikely to fully succeed if needed. Though not discussed in the tour, that aspect would make for interesting content. Although they hadn't worked through the details of their potential social experiment, they created a manual for every device onsite. Interesting snapshot of our government at work. And if you've never seen a rotary phone here's your chance. Super old technology across the board, right down to the skinny mattresses.
To bottom line it, it's a unique experience and I'd recommend it but ultimately you're seeing a very strange and expensive government project that was thankfully not needed because it likely would not have worked.
Our tour guide was adequate. There was a lot of repetition. I'd love it if he could add 20% new content and maybe give a little time to look at the photos in the video room. You can't take pictures; including a shot of the resort's infinity pool for interest.
