Ochre Pit的点评
点评：When friends knew we were travelling to Leigh Creek, they told us that the one place not to miss was the Ochre Pits. So we did and were not disappointed.
The unsealed road in off the highway was quite rough but the reward at the end was worth it. Colours of the pits changed according to the angle of the sun, the cloud cover – it was stunning.
We were aware of the use of ochre by the First Nations Peoples in ceremonial events. The infosignage widened that understanding to include Trade, Ornament, Medicine, Art and Burial. Looking at the way the pits are shaped, we came to the conclusion that originally ochre deposits must have been huge and worn away by usage over many many years.
This Ochre Pit is a site of significance to Aboriginal People and is protected under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988.
As our friends said “This is a place not too miss”. I pass that on in light of personal experience.
