点评:The annual Sculpture By the Sea at Bondi is still one of Sydney’s best free activities. Sculptures from around 100 local and international artists are set along the beautiful Coastal Walk between Bondi and Tamarama Beaches.
The exhibition runs annually from mid October to early November and runs for about for 3 weeks. For tourists whose trip coincides with the dates, it should be a must-see.
If you can avoid weekends, then do. They are the busiest periods and draw big crowds.
We went mid-week and whilst there were plenty of people, it felt lively and fun, rather than crowded and claustrophobic. Even at the most popular sculptures, we found that we could get a clear photo if we were a little bit patient.
The runaway favourite this year was Drew McDonald’s, ‘Sharnana’. Part shark, part banana, this is a fun work, perched on the edge of the cliffs.
The other crowdpleaser was Clayton Blake’s ‘Odyssey’ a giant, stainless-steel rocket ship right on the headland, that shimmered and glinted in the sunlight.
TIPS:
* Normally, you can start at either end - Bondi Beach or Tamarama - but this year, a small landslide has closed a section between Bondi and Marks Park. To work around this, the path between Bondi and Marks Park is one-way only. If you want to see the whole exhibition then this year it’s best to start at Bondi. We started at Marks Park which meant that we missed the Bondi section. We could have doubled back but because we had timed parking we had to go back to the car instead.
* The path includes sections with stairs, making it unsuitable for pushchairs. The steepest stairs are those leading down to Tamarama Beach. There’s a ramp at the back of Tamarama Park but the ramp is also very steep.
* The elevated Marks Park is a good halfway point to stop. There are food and drink stalls, a playground and public toilets here.
* Parking is always difficult during the exhibition. Most parking is limited to 2 hours and is metered. We parked a street back from Marks Park this year and whilst we still had the 2 hour limit, it was free. Public transport is a better option if you want to spend the day here and the official Sculpture By the Sea website has a good section on transport.
* As usual, take hats, sunscreen and water as you will be out in the sun on the clifftops and it is quite exposed.
