点评:Of all our experiences in Vietnam, these 3 days in Da Bac district were hands-down the most rewarding and memorable. In the mountains, tranquil, hospitable, beautiful scenery, and especially off the beaten track, with few if any other tourists. We did 2 nights in Sung Village and 1 night in Da Bia. There was lots of interaction with the locals (especially in Sung) and they were super friendly and curious about us. In both places, we stayed and ate with lovely 3-generation village families. In Sung the home was a traditional and rustic A-frame, but spacious and clean and welcoming. This particular house had a beautiful bright and airy add-on suite where we slept, with a great big comfy bed, western style bathroom and shower, and scenic views of the jungle (creature comforts never hurt!), but we ate our meals and socialized in the common room with the family. Food was AMAZING and non-stop, and easy for westerners to love, so bring your appetite! Planned activities were all enjoyable and interesting - not too much and just the right pace. Especially valuable were the treks in the hills around the village and through the mountains and forests where we learned about local plants and crops AND the endless variety of herbs and spices used in cooking, teas, and medicine. Plus there just happened to be a rare all-day all-village ceremony held while we were there - a sort-of call to the spirits to make the children smart! Lots of people of all ages, chanting, dancing, music, etc. It was wonderful! And we were welcome to sit amongst it all. Lastly, perhaps the key to our fabulous stay in Da Bac, was our guide and interpreter Quang. His english is excellent and he is a refined inquisitive well-educated outgoing young man who seemed to enjoy the Da Bac experience just as much as we did. (FYI, our opinion is that having an interpreter is essential if you want to get the most out of your stay, as english is very limited among the locals.) In any case, Quang was fantastic and key to making this visit to Da Bac district the highlight of our Vietnam vacation!
