The Bad Old Days of Medieval Punishment

点评：Medieval village stocks like these, were once commonplace in the centre of towns.
Whilst I found them a really interesting reminder of Stow’s medieval history, there was little left. We had to rely heavily on imagination to recreate a picture of the past.
Sadly, what’s left has not been well-preserved. The old wood is greying and rotting. Metal reinforcements have been added and pavers have been laid in a circle around the stocks to help preserve it but it’s a bit ‘too little, too late’.
It’s worth noting that what you see here are the remains of stocks, not pillories.
Pillories were larger and taller and had holes for the head and the hands, forcing the person to stand.
Stocks held only the feet while the person sat. They were a form of public punishment for minor, low-grade offence. Drunks and petty thieves might all find themselves here in the stocks at one time or another.
The Stow stocks are located in the centre of the village, which made the punishment about as humiliating as it could be. There was no hiding from the shame. As if that wasn’t bad enough, it was considered fair game to spit on or chuck things at the person. People threw whatever they had at hand - rotten fruit, food, anything really. It was a like an old-world spectator sport.
It wasn’t as if the good people of Stow-on-the-Wold were particularly vindictive or spiteful. Stocks were common all over England. In 1351, a statute made it a legal requirement that every town had a set and for hundreds of years, most towns kept them.
