Hidden gem' is an overused phrase on Tripadvisor but, just occasionally, it's the perfect description. Winderwath Gardens fits the bill perfectly. It is determinedly low-key in its lack of fanfare - you feel as if you're arriving at an ordinary, if picturesque, farmyard until someone wanders out to take your entry fee. The gardens themselves - small compared to many a national trust property but vast for a private property - are absolutely enchanting. Beautifully and imaginatively planted and landscaped, with a semi-naturalistic feel. With Winderwath's light firmly under a bushel, it's not attracting hoardes of visitors, in fact, as far as we could tell, we were the only non-residents there during out visit of two hours or so. For that reason, it was an oasis of absolute tranquillity. We were enchanted. We visit a lot of gardens of all kinds as a family but, despite its apparent modesty, Winderwath will be remembered as one of our favourites.
