Rented car at Brussels airport. Only drove on highways and was super careful. Upon returning the car there was no-one at the desk. A couple of weeks later Europcar charges my account for 64,07 EUR for "damages on the wheel and rim".
First of all, I checked the car before leaving in a poorly lit parking lot and didn't see any damage. The fact that the car was parked against a concrete column didn't make a thorough inspection any easier.
Secondly, the so-called damage was a minuscule scratch on the wheel rim, approx. 0,5 x 0,5 cm. Not even on the pictures they send me the damage was really visible, actually. Picture attached, try to find the damage and judge for yourself.
I am 100% sure that I DID NOT scrape the wheel rim against the curve. The damage therefore has two other likely causes:
-either the damage already pre-existed and wasn't noticed, which is fairly probable because of the poor lighting conditions in the Brussels airport (see above)
-either the damage was caused after I returned the car by a Europcar employee who moved the car, damaged it and decided to "pass on" the damage to the tenant.
I filed an official complaint with Europcar and Bank Card Company. Vis-à-vis Europcar I alleged the points above, and in addition the very important argument that the so-called damage was not established by both parties, as there was not a single Europcar employee present at the time of return. This argument was simply ignored, which is a pity because I am, or rather, I was a return customer.
The complaint for fraud with BCC is still pending.
Be very careful and also make sure to take pictures when returning the car, as this is a very quick-win mafia style tactic by Europcar employees and corporate acting in bad faith.
