点评:Florence has stuck with me for so many reasons. The feeling of stepping into the birthplace of the Renaissance is like no other. Pallazzo Vecchio is situated in the center in the Piazza Della Signoria. This Piazza has so many things to see in it. It can be overwhelming. So, visiting the inside of the Pallazzo may not be a priority. There are so many treasures in Florence and Pallazzo Vecchio is one of them. Not only as a building, but there are treasures inside. I have never visited inside until this year. There are real treasures inside the building. Before entering is the Pallazzo is a replica of Micheangelo's David. (The Original was moved to the Museum in 1873) The adjacent sculpture, Baccio Bandinelli's Hercules and Cacus is an original. As you enter the Pallazzo there is a courtyard with Ornate guilded columns and Renaissance frescos. Great first impression of what is inside. I recommend visiting inside. It isn't overly crowded and you can learn so much about the History of Florence.
The building was built in the form of a Castle with a tower over 94 meter. Yes, you can visit the top if you purchase your ticket. The building was to become the residence and work place of the republic. The look of the building was to reflect the power of the republic. When you enter the first floor, you will enter the massive Salone dei Cinquecento (Hall of the Five Hundred). Here you can find Michelangelo's sculpture, The Genius of Victory. This amazing structure could be missed because of the amazing frescos showing Florentine's amazing victories in battle.
Construction for the Pallazzo was from 1299 - 1314. Things changed when Cosimo I de Medici ordered a Restructuring and decoration of the building during the 16th century. He wanted it to be his residence. The building was transformed again to convey the grandiose power of the Medici family to the People. When the Medici family moved to Pitti Palace Pallazzo Vecchio took on its name.
I gave a long explanation for just the beginning of the visit. Another room that stood out to me was Francesco's I Studiolo. This barrel vaulted room is surrounded in a gold color fill with paintings. The room (for the prince) was used for a laboratory, office, hiding place and a cabinet of curiosities. Eleanora's (wife of Cosimo) sumptous chapel also has a vaulted ceiling, an alterpiece and wonderful fresco's painted on the walls. The list of wonderful things to see can go on. My next highlight in the top three is Dante's Mask.
In all, a walk through the Pallazzo shows that every room had its own function and is full of character.
