Shin Nihonkai Ferry from/to Otaru Port的点评
点评：We chose to travel from Hokkaido to Kansai by a ferry. This took around 22 hours from Otaru to Maizuru. It’s nice to take a break after traveling around Hokkaido for a week. The cruise provided more than enough that you could feel relaxed while being able to transport to another region of Japan.
What to expect:
1. They provide various types of rooms, from suites to bunk beds. If you reserve a room from the website, please check if you are required to issue a ticket for boarding. Be there at least 1 hour prior to the departure time.
2. What’s free: sento (bathroom), sauna, lavatories, drinking water, boiling water, children room, small theater, smoking room, outdoor deck, lobby, locker (requires 100 yen coin to lock/unlock)
3. With charges: vending machines, game room, massage chairs, coin laundry, combi (convenience store), cafe, restaurant, video room
What to bring:
1. Cash - In case there’s no signal on the cruise and that credit card might not work.
2. Coins - Especially 100 yen coins if you want to buy anything from vending machines or use lockers, laundry, etc. There’re also coin exchange machines available.
3. Towel - They provide hair dryers, shampoo, shower gel and even conditioner but please bring your own towel.
4. Download Japanese google translation - So you can use it offline when there’s no signal.
5. Snacks and drink at your own choices - There were limited options available on board.
6. If you get motion sickness easily, bring your medicine.
Do’s & Dont’s
1. Be Roman when you’re in Rome, likewise please try to fit in and respect Japanese culture. I found that Japanese people were humble and kind. They’re willing to help. Try to learn some useful Japanese conversation. From my experience, they will feel more comfortable if you at least try to talk to them in their language rather than approaching them with pure English. We were the only foreigners on board and we’re doing fine here.
2. Clean after yourself like what you do at home. Japan is a clean country even in remote area, please help maintain it as is.
3. Respect other people’s privacy - This is not a tip but it is actually a must in every country.
