When you see long stressful lines, look for other ways to experience that 'must-do' thing

点评：I'm sure you've read about the looooong line for ticket holders to enter this landmark, and when you get there, your brain has a hard time processing why you even picked an entrance time and prebooked. There was NO way I was spending hours in a hot line of folks with the sun beaming down on me, so I skipped it and entered the church next door instead b/c that line was way shorter and not even sure you needed a ticket to do this! It's where Vasco Da Gama is laid to rest, and the scene is rather moving. With Belem Tower being closed for renovation (sorry folks scaffolding all around the bottom) I guess the monastery is overrun? Next stop, steps away from the church is the famous bakery making the pastel de nata treat and you'll know you're there b/c there are swarms of people waiting in, that's right, another line. But on the side of the building there's a to-go line with like 2 people waiting where you can get the very same thing. All I did was get 2 pastries and a Coke Zero to-go and with my receipt, I flashed it to the hostess who allowed me to enter for the restroom (huge & nice) and I snapped a photo of the inside and left. Ate my treats on a shady park bench across the street. One more tip for your trip out to Belem, to get on the train or to get across the train lines to the other side, you're looking for either an underground walkway basically like entering the NYC subway or a skywalk near an office building...tons of people looked very confused about this. I heard you could go to the top of the statue with all the explorers on it but it looked too scary for me. Have fun!
