A beautiful old Oxford college!
牛津大学新学院的点评
点评：Established in the late 14th century, New College can be only be considered new insofar as it is younger than half a dozen or so other Oxford colleges. Founded by the Bishop of Winchester, the college has a number of noteworthy features such as an extensive garden, which includes a beautiful mound and parts of the old city wall, as well as a lovely medieval chapel. It's worth noting that in the chapel you can admire a portrait of St James by the famous Renaissance artist El Greco and a statue of Lazarus by the American sculptor Jacob Ebstein, as well as some beautiful stained glass windows designed by the painter Joshua Reynolds. Sadly, we couldn't explore the college hall as it was closed during our visit.
New College's distinctive architecture has been used in a number of films and TV series, including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and the TV adaption of His Dark Materials. The college has an association with a number of well-known British actors and actresses such as Hugh Grant and Kate Beckinsale, as well as the writer John Galsworthy and the publisher Victor Gollanz.
I visited New College for free with my girlfriend because I am entitled to enter free of charge with one guest as I am an Oxford alumnus. Both of us greatly enjoyed our visit and perhaps we would have paid the current £12 entry fee if we couldn't enter for free, though I must admit that I consider Magdalene College (which charges £10 per adult) the best college to visit in Oxford. Nevertheless, if you're a family with young children, New College might present just as good value for money for you as a family ticket at £29 is just one pound more expensive than the £28 Magdalene family ticket. New College is also probably a better option if you don't have a lot of time as exploring the whole of Magdalene might well take you around an hour and a half, while it shouldn't take you more than an hour to see most of New College.
