For 16 euro admission you can walk the streets of this ancient Greek/Roman seaside resort as it stood before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. On the day that I went it was not too busy and thankfully not too hot. You get a real sense of walking around a town trapped in time. There are plenty of tour guides for an extra fee, you can also self-guide using the map but its not that easy to follow and there is little in the way of information displayed. Maybe the audio guide would have been useful, lots of people were using them.
It is much smaller than Pompeii and you can see most of it in 2-3 hours.
It is easy to get to from Naples, there is the 15 minute train to Portico Ercolano from Naples which cost £1.57 and then its a 30 minute walk to the ruins. You can also get the fast Sorrento line from Naples to Ercolano Scavi but that was £13, but it is only a short 10 minute walk from that station.
