点评:I don't remember which magazine I saw it in, but I recently saw an ad for this exhibit, "Intrepid Audubon: The Birds of America." Also in the ad was a note that this Museum was on the Conde Nast list of the 51 best Museums in the U.S. I read the article, and this Museum was their best in my state, Virginia. So, being a birder and a Virginian, I was curious about the Museum. We took a leisurely 2 1/2 hour drive up to see the exhibit, which was well worth the time.
I was familiar with Audubon's works. I had heard about his double-elephant folios, but never imagined how enormous, in size, these prints were. On display were 4 volumes, each open to a bird print. The scale was amazing. And, there were a number of framed prints hanging in the room.
The exhibit doesn't take long to view. It is in the Museum, for which there is an entrance ($8 for seniors). After viewing the exhibit, I had a much greater respect for him as an artist. However, been a slave owner and a racist, that's something else.
Nearby is the Library, for which there is no entrance fee. In it, were two exhibits, "The Art of the Angle," and "Drawn to Nature: 300 years of Natural History Illustration." Both interesting exhibits.
All 3 exhibits end on September 13, 2025.
