点评:We arrived by train quite early in the day and walked up to the entrance to Burg Hohenwerfen (following footpath rather than road signs), but as we had not booked in advance we had to wait 90 minutes to join a tour – most of the castle is only viewable from part of a tour. For those arriving by car, there is a funicular railway up to the castle from the car park.
I have seen the castle a number of times from the A10 motorway and also from the train, so it was great to actually visit it.
Whilst waiting for the tour we had some refreshments, but they were not too good, and by lunchtime the limited catering facilities were very busy (recommendation: bring your own lunch and snacks. We also saw a huge bird swoop over the castle. We thought it was an eagle at first (which would have been very apt for the place where the film “Where Eagles Dare” was filmed) but it was a Cinereous Vulture (a bird that had only recently been re-introduced into the wild) but was still a fantastic sight. Our waiting time also gave us enough time to see the very interesting museum devoted to the making of the “Where Eagles Dare” and another museum about the castle and area.
Just before we left we caught the falconry show – this was worth seeing (especially as the weather was nice and it was comfortable to sit outside and watch the display). Following the display we took the footpath back to the valley, then walked back to the station and our journey back to our hotel.
