Great castle - see the falconry display!

点评：If you love castles, this is a good one to tour. The tour lasts about an hour and takes you through most of the castle, including up in the clock tower. There is a display of torture devices and a special exhibit in the old armory (when we were there it was about witches and was very interesting). The views from the castle are spectacular.
Coming from Salzburg, we took the train and from the train station hiked the trail up to the castle. There are signs marking the trail and it's a pleasant hike along the river - but you do have to hike up the hill to the castle and part of it is along a roadway. There is plenty of shoulder on the road, so it's safe, but the last part of the hike is a bit strenuous. There's a funicular that takes you from the parking lot (there are bathrooms there) up into the castle. The tour is in German, but they have electronic ear pieces that play English descriptions of where you are at - plus the guide added some things in English for our benefit.
My suggestion is to get there early enough for the 10 a.m. tour. There aren't very many people there yet and the tour will finish at 11 a.m., just in time for the falconry exhibit. I was skeptical about whether I would like it or not, but it was fantastic. They have all kinds of different birds and they fly around as part of the display. Sit at the top of the hill where you first come into the lower courtyard (there are a few benches along the path) and the birds will come right over your head.
If you want to see the ice cave that is nearby, hike back down the same trail you came up on. You will have passed the little shed where the bus picks you up to take you directly to the cave's visitor center. I think it was $10 Euros each? If you take the 10 a.m. castle tour, watch the falconry exhibit at 11 a.m., you still have time to hike down to the bus and get to the cave for one of the last 2-3 groups in.
