点评:In our 20-day vacation in Italy, we chose to spend the last three days at Badia a Coltibuono. We chose BaC for its history and wine, and because they offered a wine tasting session and a cooking lesson, both of which we attended. These were high points of our stay. We also ate two of our dinners in the BaC hotel restaurant. We did some small walks on the paths around BaC, which were lovely.
The high points are the historic building (1,000 year old monastery!), the quiet, the view over the Arno valley, those wine/cooking sessions, and in general the warmth of the staff.
The breakfast each morning was plentiful and delicious, with coffee to order. Another highlight.
The gardens behind the building are lovely. It’s a good place for quiet contemplation.
I can’t emphasize enough how great those wine/cooking sessions were, and how they added to the pleasure of our stay. Highly recommended. The BaC wines are top-notch, and the tour with the history of the property and the wine cellar was terrific. The cooking class was fun, hands on, delicious, and social. Both the tour guide (Claudia) and chef/teacher (Kairen) were wonderful, amazing, warm, fun, and knowledgeable. I wish we could have had more time just to visit, eat, and drink wine with them!
Internet access was surprisingly good, it’s clear that BaC really put effort into solving this challenge.
Other aspects of our stay were not, however, at that same high level.
We visited at the end of October, with warm days and cool nights, and our room was always too cold and damp. Those 1,000 year old three-feet thick stone walls really retain the cold and moisture. The thermostat/mini-split never made the room warm. Our bathroom had a radiator/ towel warmer, and it was the only warm place in the room!
The bathroom was typical of the Tuscan 400-year old modernized hotels we stayed at throughout our trip. So many compromises and odd angles to bring it up to modern standards. The toilet and shower worked great, the sink had pathetic water pressure, but it was all fine.
Our magnificent sized room was just off a beautiful, historic library which smelled of mildew; one would never imagine sitting and reading there. Our room lacked comfy chairs and lighting to sit and read.
In fact this was the biggest complaint/ suggestion we had: there was no place to go in the entire building to read, talk, relax. BaC needs a well lighted, comfortable seating area to read and converse. A bonus would be a fireplace and a bar. We would have lived in that space. There is none.
The hotel restaurant was good. It is in a separate building from the monastery and was closed one evening of our stay. Great service, good menu, and the food was good (not to mention the wines!) Not as good as the best food we had in restaurants elsewhere on our travels in Lombardy/ Liguria/ Tuscany but good. By the way the restaurant has both a fireplace and a bar area, but not a place to hang out/ read/converse. The restaurant bar area was warm and we hung out and read a bit there, but it was not designed as a sitting area /lobby, and it’s a wine bar, not a cocktail bar. So we didn’t last long there.
We enjoyed our stay during the day but not in the evenings. We would recommend it to others for a night or two so a visitor can do the wine tasting and cooking classes, but one need not stay in the hotel to attend.
