Charming gardens but tricky to reach

点评：We have visited Madeira on several occasions and usually do the fabulous Monte gardens and the Botanical, both in easy reach via the cable car. But our friends mentioned visiting this one when on a Riveira tour so thought we would give it a try. It doesn't seem to feature on the endless tour trips advertised so you have to make your own way there. From our hotel (Savoy Palace) Google maps estimates the bus to take 49 minutes including a change in central Funchal. On top of which there was disruption due to a drivers strike. So I tried the Bolt ride app (like Uber) - in total €28 (2 x passengers) but as I was new to the app got a 40% discount, so bargain. The first trip was to the main entrance (€11/each - paper guide only available in French and Portuguese but not clear if they had just run out of English or not). Pretty cheerless cashier but the gardens are definitely worth a visit, Banks of agapanthus, rose garden, sunken garden and varities of unusual plants collected by the Blandys in their travels. The main house is still occupied and certain parts are marked private. It was a bit confusing to navigate and signage is poor. Download the map before you visit. The main entrance is at the top of a hill but once you are down the main gardens are flat (but not wheelchair friendly). We ended in the tea house which is a efficient pleasant snack bar that's great for drinks and cakes and light lunches. Rather than head back up the daunting hill to exit we went in the side gate of the adjacent hotel (drinks and lunch also available here) and booked the return Bolt while sitting outside the hotel entrance.
