点评:Review of the Panama Relocation Tour
A Journey from April 25 to May 2, 2025
From April 25 to May 2, 2025, we embarked on a Panama relocation tour that promised to unveil the beauty, practicality, and opportunities of living in this vibrant country. As someone who is considering an international move, this tour was an excellent opportunity to explore the possibilities in person. The weeklong journey left me with some perspectives, impressions and valuable insights.
Organization and Planning
The administrative portion of the tour was well-organized. The execution of the tour needed a little work. Overall, the team did their best to ensure every detail of the tour was executed. The itinerary was crafted to balance informative sessions and some leisure activities. Our group was provided with guides, local contacts, and plenty of materials to digest during the journey. Transportation was smooth, Kudos to Jorge, an excellent driver - he gets 5 Stars.
Exploration of Panama
Urban Life in Panama City:
The tour began in the Capital, Panama City. We received information on healthcare and shopping facilities. We even visited a healthcare clinic. Me and my better half were looking forward to exploring modern neighborhoods and visiting luxury and mid-range housing options. We visited only one high rise in Panama City – not sure if it was considered midrange or luxury. We were told about the different neighborhoods but were not afforded the opportunity to visit them.
Coastal/Low Lying Areas/Mountain Retreats
We visited the Coronado area known for its beaches and expat atmosphere. We also visited Las Lajas for about two hours. Both areas exuded a friendly vibe which lent itself to wanting to get to know the areas better. Penonomé, Chitre, David and Santiago located in the central part of Panama, in the Coclé Province, are close to the Pacific coast but not directly on the beach or coastal areas. Penonomé is known as a commercial center and is the provincial capital of Coclé. Our next stops were Chitre, David and Santiago located in the low areas or as I call the Basin of Panama. All the areas have a friendly vibe. Finally, the mountain town of Boquete and Volcan with their views, showed a completely different side of Panama. Both locations offered residential options, each catering to unique lifestyle preferences. The Boquete portion of the tour was in-depth, so we provided some thoughts below:
The Good:
• Pleasant Climate: Often referred to as "eternal spring," Boquete offers comfortable, temperate weather year-round.
• Affordable Cost of Living: Compared to the US, the cost of living is notably lower, making it attractive for retirees and those seeking a more economical lifestyle. This includes significantly cheaper housing, groceries, and healthcare.
• Beautiful Scenery: Nestled in the highlands, Boquete is surrounded by picturesque mountains and lush landscapes.
The Bad:
• "Gringofied & Touristy: Boquete's popularity among foreign retirees can lead to it feeling less authentic and more tourist-oriented for some.
• Limited Public Transportation: While local buses are affordable, taxis can be expensive, and a car may be needed for travelling outside the immediate area.
• Heavy rainfall during rainy season.
Cultural and Social Immersion
It would have been nice to connect with the people of Panama. Visiting local markets to observe day-to-day life would have added depth to the experience.
Educational Seminars
Throughout the tour, we attended seminars covering crucial topics like residency requirements, healthcare options, banking, and real estate processes. These sessions were conducted by professionals who provide useful information. The Q&A segments allowed us to address specific concerns and gain clarity on the logistics of relocation.
Highlights and Takeaways
• Variety of Locations: From urban Panama City to mountain living the tour provided a wide spectrum of living environments.
• Community Insights: Needed to meet Native Panamanians to get better clarity since this is their home and they have lived here all their lives.
• We encountered many guest speakers during our tour. Some were able to project their voices to get their messages across. Whereas others did not have the ability to speak loudly. In some instances, people in the audience indicated they could not hear the guest speaker, or it was requested that they speak a little louder. Recommendation: Have portable hand-held microphones for all speaking engagements.
• Many of us did not appreciate the tone Debbie used towards Chuck. Albeit it may be their shtick, it just seemed to be disrespectful to be speaking in that manner towards another human being and further it was unprofessional. It just wasn’t a good look. Recommendation: Speak in a manner of respect towards each other.
• We stopped at a strip mall and were told we only had 30 minutes. Many of us were baffled by this even being considered as part of our relocation tour. We then realized this stop was for personal reasons for our guides. Recommendation: In lieu of rushing us through something like that, plan a Panamanian cultural activity where we can immerse and learn more about what Panama has to offer. Examples, take us to their Produce, Fish and Meat Markets. Take us to see the Panamanian Indians in their native habitat.
• I personally appreciate the love Debbie has for her dogs and the local dogs in her community. What was off putting to me was after we finished our meal at the Garden - Debbie came around to several tables and took whatever we didn’t eat and put into a styrofoam container to take home for the dogs. Recommendation: Go to the proprietor of the restaurant and collect the garbage away from the guest.
• Boquete – 3 days beautiful place but why three days?
• Recommendation: Alter the schedule so that we could see another area of Panama.
• The Garden – 3 times. The Garden was a cute, quaint place to dine. However, we didn’t need to eat there three times. Surely, there were other restaurants which could have benefited from our patronage. Further, the morning meal provided was substantial. Imagine our shock when a couple of hours passed and we were taken back to The Garden for lunch. Much food was wasted that day. Consider feeding us an earlier breakfast or providing us with a later lunch.
• Upon arrival at the Sociatel Hotel we were looking forward to billeting there. I personally loved the vibe and the concept. However, the room we were assigned was a dump. In the bathroom the shower grout lines had mold and mildew throughout. The faucet in the sink had residue on the spicket. The bathroom vanity cabinet door was barely hanging on the hinges. Bugs on the floor and on the last morning when we woke up there were bugs in our bed. These were not lady Bugs! The rack provided for our clothes - rocked back and forth - thereby we just left our clothes in our suitcases. The walls were supposed to be blue but there were a lot of places where the walls needed paint. There were no pictures on the walls. We did not have a television or desk or chairs to sit on. Not even a refrigerator to store our water or our medication. (Another member of the PRT let us store our water and medication in her refrigerator). We immediately addressed our disappointment and concerns to Debbie. She indicated that she was not responsible for our billeting. We wanted to speak to you Jackie, but you were in Texas. We reached out to Dustin, via email and he said we would have to discuss our room assignment with Debbie. We told him Debbie said she was not responsible for room assignments. We even addressed and requested to be reassigned to another room and the young lady at the front desk said she couldn’t accommodate our request. She also said TVs and refrigerators were only in suites. We paid the same amount as everyone else for this relocation tour. We should have received comparable accommodation. We should never have been placed in a room deemed undesirable. Further, this room was not habitable for guests, we should not have been put into this situation. We are including pictures to support our grievances as applicable. We were very disappointed.
Final Thoughts
The Panama relocation tour was more than just a journey. It should have been a gateway into a potential new chapter of life. With more objective planning, this tour could have turned the experience into a comprehensive exploration of what Panama has to offer. Whether you are drawn to the vibrant city life or the quiet charm of mountain and coastal towns, the tour delivers information which can be used to further your perspectives on becoming a Panama expat.
Except for Boquete, I left Panama with needing more of a deeper understanding of its culture, lifestyle, and opportunities for most of the areas we visited. The Boquete portion of the tour provided extensive information for the area. The resources available in Boquete such as legal advice, restaurants, shops and extensive rental/buying opportunities were numerous and communicated extensively. Finally, would I recommend this tour to anyone seeking a relocation fact finding experience? Yes – I would. We rated our experience 3 out of 5 stars. Personally, for us the hotel experience in Boquete had a major impact on us. With some tweaks and less “TIP” situations this trip could easily have been a 4 or 5.
