Beautiful place — absolutely appalling signage for drivers
Ortigia is a beautiful place, but the road signage and traffic restrictions for visitors are an absolute nightmare.
We were driving a rental car and trying to follow the road signs normally. Within two minutes, we were recorded by cameras entering two different restricted areas.
We subsequently received two separate fines — one for entering a lane reserved for other vehicles and another for entering a pedestrian/restricted traffic area.
I accept that the restrictions exist and, having eventually been shown the photographs, I accept that the car was recorded entering the restricted areas. That isn’t the point.
The problem is the clarity and positioning of the signage. If you are a tourist driving an unfamiliar rental car through Syracuse, the road layout, lane markings and restrictions are extremely difficult to understand in time to make the correct decision.
What makes this particularly frustrating is that these areas are camera enforced, so a momentary mistake becomes an expensive penalty rather than an opportunity to correct your route.
Surely the priority should be preventing motorists from entering restricted areas, not simply photographing them after they’ve made the wrong decision.
Put much larger signs up BEFORE the point of no return. Clearly state that the lane/road is restricted, that cameras are operating, and give visitors an obvious alternative route.
We have now paid the fines, so this isn’t about avoiding responsibility or getting out of paying. It’s about warning other tourists.
If you’re visiting Ortigia with a rental car, be extremely careful. Don’t assume that following the road ahead means you’re allowed to continue. Check every sign and road marking very carefully.
Ortigia deserves better than leaving visitors with a £/€ bill and a very sour impression of driving in Syracuse.

我们现在已经缴清了罚款，所以此举并非为了逃避责任或拒付费用，而是为了提醒其他游客。
