A Few Tips About this famous Museum

点评：If you intend to also visit the Archeological Park where the Greek and Roman theaters are located, it may benefit you to purchase a combo ticket. The museum is a good half mile in distance from the Archeological Park. We did use our iPhone to walk between the two. On a hot day, though, it may be wiser to hire a taxi.
The antiquities of eastern Sicily were first placed in a building back in 1780. What you now see was a 2 storied building from 1988 with 9,000 feet of space. One is walking through sections starting with prehistoric Greek and Roman eras. You may see two elephant dwarf skeletons. One of the elephants has the sinus cavity open making the skull look like a cyclops.
The sections go from A-D. A good number of enlarge colored photos with both English and Italian supplement the artifacts There is a section of coins from the various rulers of Sicily. Each municipality had their own signage. Plenty of pottery. Our favorite was seeing the “Bust of Artemis.” It definitively makes a good photo.
Some of the more famous works in the museum is the headless statue of a nurse known as “kourotrophos. A well liked “Bronze Little Horse,” the Gorgon—like a Medusa’s head--and the Sarcophagus of Adelfia are artifacts that are highly praised.
This museum is regarded as being one of the best in Sicily. We personally prefer the Valley of the Temples Archeological Museum—particularly seeing the 40-foot telamon.
As there are no English tours in this museum, we would hire a guide next time to explain the nitty-gritty of these artifacts. If you have any love for the antiquity, this museum should not be missed.
