A Good Experience with Serious Hiccups

点评：I choose Ganesh Voyages, Chennai because of their excellent reviews online; and Balaji (managing director) prompt reply to my queries. His pricing was reasonable, and as I travelling solo to India, the fact that they could offer service to both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka was attractive to me.
Overall, I am very satisfied with the services provided (car and driver, I booked my own hotels online), but their back office service leaves much to be desired.
I explain. At Chennai airport MAA, I was met by both the driver for Tamil Nadu ('Sin' for short), and a Ms. Vani, tour assistant for Ganesh Voyages. The payment was done in cash, and handed over (counted by Ms. Vani) in the car, before leaving the airport. So far so good. Several days later, Ms. Vani calls to say that there is $10US less in the payment received. I found it odd, as everything was counted by her and my myself; but I decided to go along with it, as cash can get 'lost' along the way. At my drop in Madurai (where there was a change-over of drivers), I gave the $10 to the driver (Sin) to cover the extra charge, and a similar amount as tip. Meanwhile, as I was driving to Madurai, Ms. Vani called again to say that the tour guides provided at several locations were not included in the cost of the trip. Well, thank heavens that I had printed out an e-mail, sent to me by Mr. Balaji himself from Ganesh Voyages, which clearly stated that they provide 'spot guides' at named locations. In other words, included in the final price, as noted in the e-mail/print-out. I had done the print-out, to show Indian authorities the purpose of my trip on arrival; little did I know that I would be showing it to the tour company itself, as proof of payment with list of inclusions.
The 2 drivers provided (Tamil Nadu and Karnataka) were safe and pleasant chaps; and Sin (Tamil Nadu) showed me sites in Chennai/Pondicherry and took some good pictures of me. Similarly, Babu the driver in Karnataka was helpful when it came to paying entries at several sites, as the Indian government now uses a qr system for payment, and he was able to do so using his cell phone and Indian id (for which I promptly re-imbursed him). And upon my drop at Bangalore, I gave Babu a similar tip for his services.
After dozens of e-mail messages, I am left with giving Ganesh Voyages a 3* rating, instead of a 5* rating. I can understand the 'lost' $10, as cash can be hard to count; but to say that spot guides are not included in the tour price when they were clearly stated in the listed items of the travel plan, is very hard to believe.
Mr. Balaji is a very pleasant person, and even contacted me as I was leaving India to ask if I was home safely. I would like to say that they need to greatly improve 'back office service', as not 1 but 2 mistakes, both regarding pricing, is unacceptable.
South India is beautiful; and standards of care and hygiene are now quite acceptable. Just count your money carefully before handing it over to Ganesh Voyages.
