点评：I greatly enjoyed the Spanish Steps “Two Continents” experience last month. It provided a unique opportunity to spend time on both shores of the Straits of Gibraltar and to see the differences (and similarities) in the landscapes and cultures of the two countries – Andalucia and northern Morocco. The greater part of the trip was spent between two centres in Morocco – Chefchaouen and Fez – but we were also able to familiarise ourselves with the lovely coastline and medieval town of Tarifa, the southernmost point in Spain, before setting off on the ferry to Tangier on our third day. We ate and slept well in Tarifa and were well rested in time for the first ferry of the day.
For me, the best section of the time in Morocco was the period in and around Chefchaouen – a historic and picturesque hill town in the Rif mountains with a maze-like medina in which the buildings are mainly painted in pale blue. We stayed in a lovely restored riad inside the medina and close to the main square and the ancient kasbah. The riad experience proved to be elegant, comfortable and very hospitable and to provide a great base for exploring the town and walking trails in the Rif. The most significant walks of the holiday were from our bases in Tarifa and from Chefchaouen. We ate evening meals, Moroccan-style in the hotel restaurant and on a couple of days we had specially prepared and delicious lunches in farmhouses along the way. Our overall leader was the owner of Spanish Steps, Peter Strange (a lively veteran of many walking holiday trips in Spain and several previous visits to Morocco) – but we also had the advantage of extremely knowledgeable local guides with excellent skills in English. We gained an enormous amount of new knowledge from them.
I found the Imperial City of Fez a bit harder to handle than Chefchaouen. Once again, our local guide through the medina was very effective, and made sure we saw all the major sights (the ancient and spectacular leather tannery – still fully operational – was my favourite), but Fez is a much busier tourist destination, which meant that our riad was rather less impressive than Casa Hasan in Chefchouen, and eating out as a group of 13 was hard to arrange. We would probably have done better to split into smaller sub-groups for our evening meals in Fez.
Our group gelled well and a half of us had chosen to fly back to UK (i.e. Stansted) direct from Fez, and that proved to be a trouble-free journey from a modern and quiet airport less than 30 minutes drive from the centre of the city. Overall a well-organised, cleverly-conceived and very enjoyable holiday.
