点评:This trip was not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. The (return) train tickets alone cost an eye-watering 400 CHF per person. The accommodation in St. Moritz (Airbnb) at that time of year - between Christmas and New Year's Eve, set us back a further 560 CHF for the 4 of us, and we were 'lucky' to find that, as prices in St. Moritz can easily reach 3.000 CHF per night at this time of year.
The scenery is without doubt spectacular, but as the trip is a whole 8 hours (Zermatt to St. Moritz or vice-versa), I would suggest you look to do just the one way and look for another mode of transport to return to your base. It will save you money and you will not repeat the same trip in the opposite direction.
As it turned out, the line was closed between Brig and Chur due to heavy snowfall (we were just informed as we were boarding the train in Zermatt), and so we were obliged to detour via Zurich on a reguar train. Of course upon arrival in St. Moritz later that day, we requested a reembursment of monies paid for that leg of the trip, which was dealt with straight away.
As for the train itself, it is comfortable in 2nd class with space to hang your jackets and stow your suitcases. The restaurant/bar service is limited of course, but they are not shy to charge you top dollar. I ordered the least expensive white wine on the list and it set me back a cool 48 CHF (I live in a wine producing country, so it is quite shocking for me). However, you can take your own food and beverages on the train as a number of people do. St. Moritz has a good minimarket in the station, although Zermatt is more limited in this respect.
Definately a 'bucket-list trip', so you have to hold your breath and just go for it!
