St Ambrose's Catholic Church - Brunswick的点评
点评：This church is without a doubt a stunning attribute to the streetscape, but it is also fenced off so you can't get near it. I could see a small garden to one side, but it was hard to distinguish whether there was a memorial in it.
When its foundation stone was laid in 1869 about 800 people from the surrounding district attended the event. The land for the church was donated by Michael Dawson. The church came at the cost of £6000.
In those days there was an Italian family in the parish. Sebastian Danielli and his wife Harriet Bagatti had arrived in Brunswick in 1859 after being married in Milan the previous year. All their children were born in Brunswick. They may have been the only Italian family in the area in those early days. They suggested Saint Ambrose's as the name for the church because St Ambrose was a much loved bishop in Milan in the 4th century.
In the 1890s Brunswick's most famous hotel, the Sarah Sands, was the base for Orange Lodge Protestant marches culminating in a skirmish with Irish Catholics in 1896. So it seems the Catholic's were not always popular in the area.
