点评:I recently stayed at the Samokov Hotel for a ski trip with my teenage daughter, booked as part of a package through Crystal Ski (TUI). The whole experience with Crystal Ski was mostly fantastic — everything was well-organised, and the support they provided throughout the trip was excellent. I wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again.
The hotel itself is a budget option in Bulgaria, and while the décor is tired and a little dated, it’s functional and clean — exactly what you'd expect for the price.
Our room was comfortable, with adjustable heating via the radiator, which worked well throughout the day and night. The beds were surprisingly comfy. One downside was the noise — the walls are quite thin, so we could hear people coming back late from après-ski while we were already asleep. That’s to be expected in a ski resort where nightlife is a big part of the experience for many, though it was more noticeable for me than my daughter. The sound of flushing toilets from neighbouring rooms was also quite loud, which could be a bit disruptive at night.
The bathroom is a plastic wet room — I noticed some reviews complaining about missing bath sealant, but it’s simply not designed that way. The wet room style might be different from what some people are used to, but it was practical and worked perfectly fine.
Breakfast was basic but adequate — enough variety to set us up for a day on the slopes. It’s not a luxury spread, but we never left hungry.
The location is a real highlight — right by the gondola, making it incredibly easy to get to the slopes. I’d definitely recommend taking the gondola up the mountain, even if you’re not skiing, just to experience the stunning views — it’s absolutely worth it.
A word of advice for first-time skiers — while dry ski slope lessons back home can give you a feel for the basics, I’d suggest keeping them to just a taster session. Even if you’ve done some dry slope practice, I’d still recommend joining the beginners’ group at ski school when you arrive. Learning on real snow is completely different, and the instructors go through all the basics again anyway. In hindsight, I wouldn’t have done more than a brief dry slope session — the real learning happens on the mountain from day one of ski school.
A major downside to be aware of is the sickness bug (diarrhoea and vomiting) that seems to be a constant issue in Borovets, season after season. It’s not limited to a particular hotel, or caused by water, ice, or food — it most likely spreads through the crowded, poorly ventilated bars and the generally low hygiene standards in some places. The John Smith’s pub and White House had the worst bar toilets we saw, which likely doesn’t help the situation. From what we experienced and heard from others, at least half the travellers seemed to get the bug during their stay, often losing a day or more of their holiday to illness.
What’s concerning is that there appeared to be no infection control in the hotel. I saw a cleaner in the corridors, but there was no sign of disinfecting high-touch areas like door handles or lift buttons — which feels surprising given the ongoing presence of such a highly infectious bug. After everything we learned from Covid, you’d expect a bit more care and attention to basic hygiene practices.
While Crystal Ski were great overall, I did run into issues when I fell ill and needed to cancel an excursion. There’s a contact number for Crystal excursions, but they couldn’t actually help — they just told me to go and see the rep in person at the hotel, at very specific times twice a day. When you’re unwell, this simply isn’t practical. The helpline wasn’t any better — again, they only directed me back to the rep. In the end, the only way I managed to cancel the excursion was by finding the excursion company’s Facebook page and messaging them directly — it was the only contact information I could track down online. This felt disorganised and frustrating, especially in an emergency.
The pool at the hotel was a bit on the cold side, but we still used it daily — it was clean and a nice way to unwind after skiing. The hotel also has some extra facilities — like a bowling alley and shooting range — which we didn’t use, but they’re a good option if you want something to do in the evenings.
It’s also worth noting that Borovets isn’t as cheap as it used to be. A meal for two in a restaurant — two mains and a couple of drinks — was around 90 lev (roughly £40–45). A simple bar lunch with a drink cost about 20 lev per person (around £8–10 each).
For food and activities, I’d recommend Malina Bar — next to the sledging slope at the bottom of the black run. You can use their sledges for free if you’re a customer, which was a fun extra activity after skiing. The Mexican restaurant in town was also fantastic, but you do need to book ahead as it’s really popular.
We also tried the ski-doo safari — the company at the bottom of the black run offers this. While the setup was a bit basic and the staff weren’t the friendliest, the experience itself was safe and really enjoyable. It’s a fun way to spend some time off the slopes.
If you have time on your checkout day, I highly recommend taking the Crystal Ski tour of Sofia. It was well worth it — a great way to explore a bit of the city before heading home and a nice way to round off the trip.
The staff at the Samokov were friendly and helpful, and a special mention goes to George at the ski school — he was fantastic and really made our first ski trip a positive experience.
Despite the few downsides, we’ve had a brilliant trip — three amazing days of ski school, a fun day of sledging, a tour of Sofia, a ski-doo safari, and a final day of gentle skiing to wrap it all up.
While I probably wouldn’t stay at the Samokov again — simply because I now know the area better and would choose somewhere quieter, away from the bars but still close to the slopes — the hotel was absolutely fine for what we needed. Some of the negative reviews seem a bit harsh — it’s a basic hotel, but it’s clean, comfortable, and in a fantastic location. If you're looking for somewhere affordable and convenient for a ski holiday, it does the job.
