Fascinating museum - could be more accommodating of pre-schoolers

点评：I visited on a Friday with my three year old daughter and both enjoyed the fascinating and extensive exhibits. It's very much a case of 'the more you look, the more you see' so it's worth walking around more than once. My daughter particularly delighted in opening the wooden cases to look at the bugs and butterflies and looking at the impressive images of the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition - not to be missed!
We enjoyed lunch at the museum's Curiositea Tea Room which provides great quality food (although sadly no veggie option for the sausahe rolls) and a lovely choice of cakes. It's a very small space though so I'd recommend getting there early for lunch or else take a short walk down the street to the Akeman pub.
The museum offers free parking, good wheelchair/pushchair access and a lovely gift shop. All the staff we met were friendly and helpful.
Our visit was, however, marred by a large (i.e. two coaches) and quite boisterous school trip which effectively took over the museum until mid-afternoon. The teachers made no effort to break the large group into smaller, manageable groups, but rather traipsed around in one huge stampede. Some of the children didn't have any respect for other visitors. While the museum will no doubt remain an attractive destination for school trips, their vast numbers and behaviour can be intimidating to pre-school children, particularly as some areas are tight on space.The museum very much encourages pre-booking which is utterly pointless if you find a large school trip has been booked onto the same time slot, of which there was no warning on the website at the time i booked. During our visit, a fellow mother of a toddler whose to leave and return once the school trip had left, so I'm not the only one who feels this way.
I would encourage the management team to give serious consideration to introducing a small number of time slots solely dedicated to pre-school aged children so that they too can enjoy all that the museum has to offer and the museum ensures it remains accessible to all. Other museums successfully achieve this, with a good example being the Roald Dahl museum in Great Missenden which runs its 'Titchy Toddlers' sessions on one Friday morning per month.
I probably would visit the museum again but but would be inclined to phone ahead to determine when I stand the best chance of being guaranteed a visit free from raucous school trips.
